What Is Rozerem and Will it Help me Sleep?

We all know how the body works. And just as well we know when it's time to go to sleep and the right time to wake up. Our internal clock functions perfectly, offering proper signals and respecting the regular sleep-wake cycle. But what happens when this cycle is disrupted due to regular stress, diverse illness or constant traveling? Should we break down when faced with insomnia or resort to symptomatic treatment? The answer is obvious.

Rozerem is hypnotic agent, available on prescription. The medication is not recommended to be taken at the same time with fluvoxamine (Luvox, usually administered for clinical depression) and agents with antifungal properties (ketoconazole). Studies have shown that simultaneous administration of Rozerem with antibacterial drugs, such as Rifampin (used for the treatment of tuberculosis) can decrease the efficiency of the drug.

Current studies have not yet determined evident benefits of Rozerem during pregnancy. The medication should be used with precaution, after a thorough medical evaluation. The medical specialist ought to determine the risks for both the fetus and the mother. Rozerem has not been shown to have any efficiency during labor, thus it is not recommended in such cases. Ongoing studies are still trying to determine if Rozerem is safe to be used by children.

Long-term treatments with Rozerem are likely to produce the following side-effects: somnolence, vertigo, nausea, tiredness and headaches. In some cases, vertigo and insomnia can be aggravated, accompanied by more serious symptoms, including frequent bowel movements and muscle pain. Patient-controlled trials have demonstrated that patients treated with Rozerem can sometimes suffer from rebound insomnia.

Similar studies have been performed in order to determine Rozerem potential overdose. Patients were administered various doses, with a maximum of 160 mg (single dose) and no case of overdose was reported. Nevertheless, doctors advise immediate measures to be taken in case an overdose with Rozerem is suspected. Patients should seek emergency medical attention, with symptomatic treatment and supportive measures when needed. Gastric lavage, administration of intravenous fluids and vital signs monitoring are mandatory for anyone who has taken excessive doses.

Talking about Rozerem dosage, patients are usually administered 8 mg per day, indicated to be taken with half an hour before going to bed. The medication is available as round, film-coated tablets in bottles of 30, 100 and 500. The container must be kept closed, stored away from excessive moisture, humidity or rising temperatures. Rozerem is not a controlled substance and it does not present any risk for substance abuse or potential dependence. The medication interacts with specific parts of the human brain, without any effect on those that are likely to cause addiction.

Being a hypnotic agent, Rozerem is not indicated to be taken before driving or engaging in other activities that require active concentration. Rozerem presents clearly benefits for those who suffer from insomnia, eliminating the undesirable effects encountered in similar medication. Patients fall asleep in a short period of time after taking Rozerem, waking up rested and without feeling lethargic. For them, it's an important step to be able to fall asleep and wake up prepared for a busy day. It is important to understand that Rozerem is not a sedative and should not be taken as such. The drug restores the normal sleep-wake cycle, allowing one to sleep peacefully. Rozerem will not affect your state of equilibrium and neither your memory. The only thing it will do is to regulate the sleep-wake cycle, preventing insomnia from happening. You will not feel sedated at any moment of your treatment.

Before taking Rozerem, you should discuss with your doctor about any prescription and non-prescription drugs you are taking, allergies and previous drug interactions you have personally experienced. You are advised to mention antidepressant treatments, liver impairment, obstructive sleep apnea, breathing problems (obstructive pulmonary disease) and medical history of depression or mental illness. In all these situations, the doctor will carefully analyze your treatment plan and make necessary dosage adjustments. The medication should be taken exactly as prescribed, never in higher doses or for longer periods of time. Even if Rozerem is not habit-forming, patients can suffer from side-effects and unwanted adverse reactions.

Read your prescription label with increased attention and follow the indications accordingly. Take your medication with a full glass of water and avoid high-fat meals, as they can reduce the drug's efficiency. Rozerem should be taken on a single dosage, right before going to sleep. You should not compensate for the medication you missed by increasing your dosage. Just make sure you take Rozerem as prescribed and in due time you will forget all about insomnia!
